Margaret "Peggy" Nagel was born into the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Montana's Rocky Boy Indian Reservation on July 5, 1953. She was a third-generation of the original members of her tribe. She was working on a Doctoral Degree from the University of Washington, at the time of her death. In 1983, Peggy along with the Tribal Elders and other educational leaders of her tribe, founded Stone Child College - a long time dream of the Chippewa Cree people. Peggy was the founding President of Stone Child College and served as President until her death. "Sitting Old Woman" Building is located to the east of Kennewash Hall and named in honor of Margaret "Peggy" Nagel, who journeyed to the spirit world in December of 1994. Her given Indian name was "Sitting Old Woman", given to her by Mr. Joe Roan of Hobbema, Canada, and is considered a name of great honor because the wisdom of the elders could be seen in her eyes, even though she was only a girl. The building houses the library, bookstore, the Business Office, Student Support Services, Financial Aid, Registrar/Admisssions and various department programs. Throughout her career as an educational leader in Indian Country, Peggy married and raised two children, was President of Montana Indian Education Association and served on a number of national educational associations. She initiated the Rocky Boy Alliance for Progressive Policy for voter education and received national honor in Who's Who in American Education 1993. Peggy's many prestigious honors include a listing in the Outstanding American Indian/Alaskan Native Women's Directory, the Native American Graduate Fellowship Program, and special recognition from the Montana Human Rights Commission.
